Sibone Okunye - Seeing Something Else
National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo
23 November - 19 December 2023
I'm writing to you today from a place of deep gratitude and excitement, halfway through my tenure as an artist in residence at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. The journey thus far has been nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the incredible support from Gallery Curator, Doris Kamipura, her amazing team, and the wonderfully warm and generous community of artists.
I am thrilled to share the success of my exhibition, 'Sibone Okunye: Seeing Something Else,' which opened its doors on Thursday, 23rd November. The presence of Noreen Makhurane from Plan International as the Guest of Honour added a special touch to the event, perfectly echoing the empowering spirit of the exhibition. Doris Kamipura’s welcoming address on behalf of the gallery set the perfect tone for what was an evening of art, culture, and community.
A special thanks goes to historian and cultural expert Pathisa Nyathi, whose insights on the ritual uses of many objects in the show have been invaluable. His contributions have enriched the exhibition immeasurably, offering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our cultural heritage.
The response to the exhibition has been overwhelmingly positive, a testament to the power of art to connect, inspire, and provoke thought. Through 'Sibone Okunye: Seeing Something Else', we explore the stories, dreams, and hopes of women, using icansi – a reed mat, as a canvas for expression. This exhibition has sparked many generative questions about traditional practices and the role of women, transforming an often overlooked object into a focal point of cultural and artistic exploration.
As I continue my residency, I am filled with anticipation for what the remaining time will bring. Your support and the community's engagement with the exhibition have been the driving forces behind this enriching experience. 'Sibone Okunye: Seeing Something Else' will be on display until 20th December 2023, and I warmly invite everyone, who can,to visit and engage with the works.
